The single "A Little Bit Longer" and the album, which comes out on Tuesday, August 12, is about the losses you felt when you developed diabetes. How did you know that fans would relate to this?
"I began writing that song the day I was diagnosed but finished it later. It's not just about diabetes. It has helped people going through heartaches. I consider it a 'life song.'"
Did you ever have any fears that being so open about having diabetes could hurt your image as a teen idol?
"I never really felt that. I was diagnosed in November 2005 and thought that my peers wouldn't quite fully understand what diabetes was. It wasn't that I felt that they would judge it. So I explained that I have diabetes, which basically means that my pancreas doesn't work and that I have to take injections. And, basically, they thought that that was kind of cool!"
"I was never ashamed of having diabetes. Instead, I was always very excited to tell people that I still could live out my dreams and live my life the way I wanted to. That has kind of always been my ambition--to be a positive light."
But what about your social life? Is diabetes a turn-off to girls?
"The girls I've dated have all been very understanding and supportive. Now I'm not ashamed to pull out my meter in a restaurant and test my blood at the table, because I know that my date won't be like, 'Whoa! What are you doing?'"
"The same thing goes for my co-stars on the set, such as when we filmed Camp Rock. Generally, their reaction was 'Hey, whatever you need, we're here for you.'"
Is it difficult to control your diabetes when you're performing?
"Generally, we play for about an hour and 45 minutes, which is like intense exercise. If my blood sugar drops, I leave the stage to treat it with orange juice or, if it's very low, regular soda, and let my brothers cover for me. We're a team."
"At the end of the day, what matters most is meeting the kids. "That I am very competitive and really into sports — all sports. I especially love to play golf. And I find that whenever I play golf, I come off the course with a good blood sugar of around 120, so I really enjoy playing golf. Our family moved from New Jersey and lives in Los Angeles now, because that's where a lot of the opportunities are. But we also have a house in Dallas that's off a golf course!"
The Jonas Brothers have had a phenomenally successful year of nonstop work. What do you do for fun?
"We play golf! Plus, our management team sees to it that we have one to two days off every week. But when we're on tour, we usually start our days at 2 p.m., which gives us the morning to sleep in. It's like we're in hotels every day of our lives. I usually share a room with Joe. Oh, and the whole family travels together in the tour bus."
Your fans are pretty intense. Have any tried to gain access to your tour bus or hotel rooms?
"Oh yeah, for sure. Someone broke into our house yesterday. And a lot of times fans walk inside our front gate in L.A., take a leaf off one of our trees and then run out."
You've recently run through the rumor mill about dating Miley Cyrus and kissing Selena Gomez. Who is the special girl in your life?
"My mother — ha ha! Getting back to that rumor mill, the thing that kind of cracks us up at the end of the day is that people are so interested in my 15-year-old dating life."
So, you really do find opportunities and make the time to date?
"I do date. Dating is great. I love girls! But I try to keep it to myself. I'm open about a lot of things in my life, including my diabetes. But when it comes to my dating life, I keep that quiet."
